  • Dr. Johnny Chang

    Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Chang is unique among Altos Oaks Plastic Surgery‘s plastic and reconstructive surgeons in that before he pursued medicine, he had obtained 2 engineering degrees from the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in mechanical engineering and design, and worked in roles within that industry. What would entice someone to give up such as successful early career and return to school to become a doctor? Dr. Chang says that it was more than just the diversity of the technical challenges in plastic surgery. He strives to use his talents to help people, and plastic and reconstructive surgery lets him dramatically and directly improve his patients’ quality of life. “I was missing the human element as an engineer,” Dr. Chang says. “To me, each surgery is something my patient and I embark on together as a team. I’m a firm believer that the best outcomes come from a collaborative approach, and together we are solving a human design challenge.” Dr. Chang graduated from the prestigious Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery internship and plastic surgery residency at Brown University. In addition to being certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chang completed fellowship training in microvascular surgery at The Buncke Clinic in San Francisco. This allows him to perform highly technical procedures such as deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction, which requires careful connection of tiny blood vessels and nerves under a high-powered microscope. As a plastic surgeon, his goal for all his patients is to enrich their lives in some way by improving form or function. He believes that Altos Oaks Plastic Surgery is an ideal place for a plastic surgeon to thrive because the focus is on the patient and understanding her/his desires. Schedule Your Consultation “It is difficult for me to pick what is most rewarding about my practice because every day is filled with so many different and interesting challenges,” he says. Outside of work, Dr. Chang pursues hobbies that also require precision, skill, creativity and teamwork, including photography, snowboarding, ice hockey and cooking. In addition, he is fluent in Mandarin.

  • Dr. John Connolly

    Plastic Surgeon

When he first meets with a patient, he begins by listening. “When I go into a consultation, I don’t talk. I let them do all the talking,” he says. “I try to get out of them exactly what they see as the problem. Once I understand the problem from their perspective, then I can offer solutions. I do lots of drawings and explain in great detail so that they know exactly what to expect and how things are going to turn out.” A Bay Area native, Dr. Connolly knew he wanted to be a plastic surgeon since he was 5 years old and saw a plastic surgeon repair his 3-year-old brother’s split lip. To achieve his dream, he attended Bellarmine College Preparatory and Stanford University. He then obtained his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and received his plastic surgery training at the University of Washington in Seattle. After completing his residency, Dr. Connolly joined the University of Washington’s faculty until coming to Camino Medical Group, which became part of the Altos Oaks Plastic Surgery in 2003. What he loves about plastic surgery is that it is not “cookbook medicine” where each problem has only one solution. It allows him to grow and evolve as a surgeon at the same time as he improves his patients’ quality of live. “As people age and have appearance issues that bother them, it can affect their lives in so many ways and to see them come out on the other end of that and how you can totally change their life is pretty gratifying,” he says. His primary surgical interests include plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breasts and body, in addition to body contouring procedures following bariatric surgery or significant weight loss. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Connolly is married and enjoys cooking, running, golf and tennis.
